The Arts Area at New York University Shanghai provide students with technically and intellectually stimulating courses informed by hands-on instruction and academic rigor. As part of a global liberal arts institution, we encourage artistic and critical engagement with the world through the lens of creative and cultural knowledge. Committed to the belief that the Arts play a crucial role in developing global citizens, the NYU Shanghai Arts Area foster an environment of cross- and inter-disciplinary experimentation encompassing local, regional, national and international discourses.
Students have the opportunity to study with our diverse community of experts and active practitioners in the fields of Dance, Music, Theater, and Visual Arts. The NYU Shanghai Performing and Visual Arts offer a range of studio courses and hybrid studio-seminar courses at levels ranging from enrichment classes to advanced arts practices. Our studios and classrooms function as research labs in which mastery of a subject through discipline and rigor builds resilience, self-knowledge, and confidence. They offer spaces for embodied experimentation; critical and analytic thinking within a global art context; cultivating technical development in ways that emphasize individual and divergent perspectives; and creating platforms for students to examine their subjects in relation to their lived experience. These transferable skills prepare students for pursuits in all fields beyond graduation.
