The performing arts are collaborative and time-based art forms that are presented in a community setting. In these art forms, performers express themselves creatively through movement, sound, gesture, and speech. At once diverse, global, humanistic, and social, the performing arts call attention to unique cultural traditions and our shared human experience.

NYU Shanghai offers a wide range of courses in the three main performing arts genres: dance, music, and theater. These courses fall into three broad categories:

  • Theory courses, where students engage in historical and critical analysis on performing arts subjects;
  • Praxis courses, where students train in the skills necessary to create performances of their own; and
  • Hybrid courses, where students apply theory in a performance context.

Students can choose between courses in choreography, contemporary dance, and the dances of China; instrumental and vocal music ensembles, private piano, and the music of Shanghai; “Art as a Hammer,” the theory and practice of acting; and much more.
